It turned out to be a perfect summer evening for Happy Tails to hold its first Second Saturday Art Show & Reception, Painting for Paws, on June 10. The event took place outside of Sacramento magazine at 56 th and H streets, right across for the HT center. Raising more than $3,500 for HT, the art show featured 32 paintings donated by local artists, and 24 paintings by the homeless kitties (and one dog) of Happy Tails.

Paintings by HT kitties were on display along with the artists' bios.

Silent auction items and drawing prizes were donated by local businesses.

With great artistic talent and enthusiasm, the HT animals pranced their paws, and swished their tails, through water-based, non-toxic paint to create colorful and exciting works of art. All pieces were matted and framed, and displayed with a photo and bio of the furry, four-legged artist.

In addition to the art show and reception, HT volunteers were on hand to give tours of the center, answer questions and send kitties home with qualified new parents.

Volunteers served complimentary wine, water and finger food.

Local artists donated animal-related artwork to benefit HT.

A big thank you goes out to Sacramento magazine for sponsoring the event — giving HT a quarter-page ad and prominently featuring the art show in the calendar section of the June edition.

Donating drawing prizes were Sacramento magazine, Kismet Maternity, Tupelo Coffeehouse & Roasting Company, Zama Hair, Cézanne Skin Spa, Firefly Boutique & Salon, Harrison & Keller Fine Art & Gifts, Ivy House, Pampered Pet Salon, Reigning Cats & Dogs, Selland’s Market-Café, Serendipity Boutique and Trader Joe’s on Folsom Blvd.

Donating to the Silent Auction were Brioche Artisan Bakery, Caren Halvorsen, Susan Heggstad Photography, Hope Harris Photography, Dennis & Kay Inks and Orr’iginals Jewelry by Paula Orr, who also sold her animal-related jewelry at the event and donated part of the proceeds to HT.

Complimentary wine was provided by Deaver Vineyards, Holly’s Hill Vineyards, Sierra Vista Vineyards & Winery and Van der Vijver Estate. Water was donated by Longs Drugs on Folsom Blvd., and wonderful appetizers, cakes and cookies were provided by Senior Gleaners, Inc.

Background music was hosted by Wired For Sound DJ Service, and graphic artwork for everything from the posters to invitations to artist bios was donated by kjCreates — Photography & Design and Lezlee Willems Design.

To help publicize the event, Future Film & Graphics created two large banner signs that were set up one week before the event at H and 56 th Street.
