Finding a Home for Your Pet
Happy Tails receives many requests from community members who have to surrender their beloved pets. While we wish we could take them all in, we often run out of room at our Adoption Center and in foster homes — and have to decline accepting new animals.
When this happens, we ask you to take every possible step to find your pet a new home on your own, instead of surrendering him/her to a local animal shelter. In addition to networking with family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to find your pet a new home, please consider the following:
Check Breed Rescue Groups
There is a rescue group for almost every breed of dog or cat. If you pet is a particular breed or even mix with identifying characteristics, search the Internet for that breed’s rescue group. Many of these groups have people looking for specific breeds.
Advertise in the Paper
You can place an ad in many local papers. But remember to charge a fee of at least $50. Please do not put “free to good home” — anyone who wants to adopt your pet must have the financial resources to care for him/her long-term, and be willing to pay something for a new family member.
Post Flyers
Make a flyer with a photo and important information about your pet. Give them to your friends, neighbors and family to post at their work. Post the flyers at vet offices, dog parks, local businesses, etc.
